Chapter 2

Penny Archibald woke up in segments, and with instinct automatically latching on to two important things: first was keeping her eyes closed, and second was trying to remember what had happened before she went to sleep. Her mind formed the answers, putting up an image of the exact area she was in, and what had been given to her to make her drop to the cold floor.

Prison cell. Medicine. A pretty woman she’d met before…actually, she’d attacked before, which had never been her intention.

And she wasn’t alone now.

She could feel it in the air—that someone was with her, and that someone was watching her. Despite the chains wrapped around her limbs, her magic wasn’t completely lost, and it swirled around her in a protective energy. That was the only warning she needed.

Penny took some time to gather whatever strength she had left, hoping she struck jackpot and it was the same guy from before: Sid, who had the weakest mind out of her visitors and was easy to manipulate. Who knew if this was finally the day she would be snuck out and free from all this?

She opened her eyes.

It wasn’t Sid.

In front of her was a man who didn’t even bother to hide himself at the side, as he sat on a wooden chair right in front of her cell. He was tall, muscled and broad, but in a way that wasn’t too much. Hair between brown and black, semi-long and curling down his ears. Even in his supposedly relaxed state, she could see how still his body was, indicating there was something hidden there. An intensity.

It made her wary, and she let some of that wariness show. It was the smart thing to do. She then did her usual thing of stretching her limbs as far as the chains would allow, feeling her muscles stretch and wake slowly from sleep, her body feels like it partially healed during her forced slumber.

She couldn’t blame the healer, considering Penny had been among a guilty party of three to attack that healer just over a month ago.

The man in front of her didn’t say a word, leaving her in silence, too, as she tried to figure out what kind of creature he was. Not human, most likely. Probably vampire with that stillness, but she had a feeling he wasn’t one. Shifter, then?

Warlock?

Those intense eyes stopped holding her gaze long enough to sweep across her from head to foot. Deciding being silent was just driving her nuts with curiosity, Penny finally cleared her throat.

“So is that how the guards here intimidate their prisoners? Stare downs?”

The question didn’t faze him, as he merely looked her in the eye. An impersonal gaze, but intense all the same.

“I was just wondering about your wounds, and the fact that they haven’t fully healed yet. It’s been a month.”

“More than a month,” she correctly softly. “And I’ve already told your leader all that I know. There’s no point in rehashing it.”

Like the fact that the
